Story

At 35 weeks and 3 days into our second pregnancy, on August 18th, 2019 Matt and I were given the news that our baby no longer had a heartbeat. August 19th, 2019, we welcomed our sleeping angel into the world. Mia Anne Baker.

I had a concealed placental abruption; this means that my placenta detached from the wall of my womb. Because it was concealed, I had nothing to show or any reason for concern until I was not able to feel Mia move. We have been told medically we had a perfect baby after every test performed, we still have no answer as to why my placenta detached. We will now carry with us this burning question of why, forever.

We medically had a perfect pregnancy, 3 days prior to losing Mia we had a scan and saw her kicking and moving about, as well as getting to hear her heartbeat.

Our world was shattered, but thanks to Bears of Hopes packages, the cuddle cot supplied at the hospital and the support from our funeral home, we were able to spend as much time with Mia as we could.

Currently, in Australia, there is a rate of 6 babies a day born stillborn. Mia was just one of those babies that weren't given the opportunity at life. So many families experience the loss of their baby each year in Australia. It is an incredibly heartbreaking and traumatic time for parents. We hope that by fundraising for this cuddle cot we will be able to help other families going through this loss.

We are fundraising for a cuddle cot to be donated and used in conjunction with the funeral homes in the Wagga Wagga community. Bears of Hope also puts together bear packages to support bereaved families in those crucial days after the loss of their baby. A cuddle cot is a cooling system that lays beneath the baby within a bassinet. It enables families to keep their baby close and create beautiful memories, extending the time they are able to spend with their baby, before saying their final goodbyes.

We would love you to help us reach our goal, supporting this cause by donating any amount or attending one of the two fundraisers that we are holding throughout the year.

We are so grateful for the continued support throughout our journey.

With great thanks,

Matt, Bek, Sophie & Mia.
