Story
December 3rd 2021 will mark the 18th year since my baby boy, Aiken was born sleeping. I wanted to do something extra special this year in his honour to help mark this amazing milestone. Unfortunately, I have never been able to celebrate with birthday parties, loss of a tooth, first day of school , shoot his first hoop, or take the test to get his licence… So to do this for his 18th will be AMAZING.
This year stands out to me in what has been an incredible journey for myself and my now family of 6! Aiken’s younger siblings have always known about him, visit his memorial, speak openly about what happened and of course discuss the “what if’s” about their big brother! We will all be involved in this fundraising venture so that together we can help other grieving families spend that little bit of extra time with their precious baby.
For those who don’t know the statistics, Over 2,000 babies are stillborn each year – that’s six a day! It’s a national tragedy that’s nearly double the road toll.
Being able to donate a cuddle cot to a hospital in Aikens memory will be one of the most rewarding things I could ever do on this lifelong journey of child loss and grief. I was never given the opportunity to use a cuddle cot and have so many regrets around the time of his birth and how little time I got to spend with him. If I can contribute to changing this experience and making memories for another family I would feel forever comforted knowing that somehow Aiken was able to make a difference.
What is a cuddle cot???
A cuddle cot is a cooling system that lays beneath the baby within a bassinet. It enables families to keep their baby close and create beautiful memories, spending as much time as they wish with their baby, before saying goodbye. The cuddle cot that we end up donating will have this very special wording: “Lovingly donated in honour of Aiken 3.12.03”
